Kappa Lambda 2020 Scholarship Application

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in pursuing one of the academic scholarships funded by the Kappa Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Each year our Fraternity, through its Educational Foundation, provides at least seven scholarships valued at $1,000 each to deserving African-American males in Guilford County Schools.

The guidelines for these scholarships are listed below. If you believe you satisfy these requirements, we ask that you apply for one of our scholarships by completing the following application.

Criteria and Next Steps:
*Applicants must be a graduating senior and must enroll in a four-year College or University immediately upon
graduating from high school.
*Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (weighted).
*In order to complete the application, you must have a Google email/account and the entire application must be completed ONLINE

Complete Scholarship Packets Must Include
1.) An electronically submitted Scholarship Application.
    a. Please visit https://forms.gle/1FBGC8pJ5i5Kc95N8 to complete the application. a gmail account is required.
2.) Two letters of recommendation – one of which must come from a representative of your high school.
    a. Please have your references complete the online reference form available at https://goo.gl/forms/8xE1GYHAAJgy3R3D3, and it must be completed by
        the application deadline of February 14, 2020.
    b. One reference must be from the academic community (Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher, or Counselor.)
3.) A copy of your official high school transcript (must be uploaded along with the application packet)
4.) A copy of your official SAT or ACT scores (Note: SAT and ACT scores are not always included with your transcript. Please verify with your Guidance Counselor
before submitting online- must be uploaded along with the application packet)
5.) – A 750-1000 word, essay on the following topic: What is your interpretation of “With liberty and justice for all” and do you feel that as an African American male that liberty and justice are freely given to you?

Deadline:
Your completed, application packet must be received by Friday, February 14, 2020 (no later than 11:59 p.m.). Any materials submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed.

Next Steps…
– All application packets received by the deadline will be reviewed to ensure that all required information has been submitted.
– Applicants who meet the requirements and have a completed application packet may be contacted via e-mail or phone to schedule an in-person interview with the scholarship committee on March 14, 2020 in Greensboro.
– All selected Winners will be invited to a reception on Saturday, May 9, 2020.

Dates to Keep in Mind:
*Interviews are scheduled for either Saturday, March 14, 2020 or Sunday, March 15, 2020. Exact times
and location will be announced later. Until then, please try to keep these dates open. We will need to schedule
a 30 minute interview with our top applicants on one of these days. Details to come.

A Friendly Word of Advice
Remember that it takes time to gather all of the information that you need. So, please start early. Please follow all of the instructions outlined in this letter and/or other Alpha Phi Alpha scholarship application materials. Any application packet without the five items outlined in this letter will be considered incomplete and, unfortunately, students will be ineligible to be receive a potential invitation for an interview.
